Chipotle Pepper Powder is created by grinding whole Chipotle Peppers into fine ground powder. Chipotle Peppers are produced from smoked, dried Jalapeno Peppers.
Approximately, one-fifth of the Jalapeno crop is processed for Chipotle Peppers. The Jalapeno Peppers are slowly smoked over a wood burning fire to achieve the spicy, smoked, full-bodied rich, tangy taste that we appreciate as the distinctive Chipotle flavor.
The vast amount of Chipotle Peppers are produced in the Northern Region of Mexico. This variety of Chipotle Pepper is known as the Morita, which is Spanish for blackberry or black raspberry. The literal translation for Morita is “Little Purple One”. The peppers measure between two and five inches in length. The Chipotle Morita Pepper is the most commonly known type of Chipotle Pepper in the United States. Our Chipotle Pepper Powder is ground from the Morita variety. On the Scoville Heat Scale, which calculates the heat of peppers, the Chipotle measures between 5,000 and 10,000 units. The Chipotle Peppers lose some of the heat of the Jalapeno Peppers in the smoking and drying process but they are still considered to contain a medium heat level.
Chipotle Pepper Powder is popular because it delivers the fantastic Chipotle flavor for all of your Mexican and Southwestern cuisine without all the preparation associated with cooking with whole Chipotle Peppers. Chipotle Powder is a great ingredient to enhance meat, beans, rice, sauces and salsa. Check out our recipe for Chipotle Rubbed Pork Chops.
