Cinnamon For Everyone

In the United States and many countries around the world today, Cinnamon and Cassia are considered interchangeable.  Authentic Cinnamon originates from Sri Lanka.  Cassia originally comes Burma. Today most of the Cinnamon and Cassia come from China and Vietnam. Both come from the dried bark of the evergreen tree from the Laurel Species.

While there are subtle differences, everyone would agree that Cinnamon is one of the most popular, beloved spices in our country. Some people favor Cassia over Cinnamon because of its strong, rich flavor and aroma. Cassia has this intense taste and smell because of its high content of volatile oil. Cinnamon contains eugenol oil which gives it a warm, woodsy scent with a trace of cloves and a hint of citrus.

In addition to adding great flavor and aroma to our food, Cinnamon’s Health Benefits only serve to make it truly indispensable in our daily diet.  Cinnamon is considered to have  a high level of antioxidant properties. Cinnamon has antibacterial and antifungal properties because of its oil content. It has anti-inflammatory properties that may help reduce the symptoms of migraine headaches and the pain of arthritis. It may play a role in reducing cholesterol levels.  It is considered to aid in digestion. It is a good source of iron, magnesium, calcium and dietary fiber. According to some studies, smelling cinnamon may improve memory and cognitive function. Recent studies have had promising findings pointing to the hope that Cinnamon may play a role in regulating blood sugar levels and treating Type 2 Diabetes.

As with most things in life, it comes down to personal preference and taste. It is clear that whichever Cinnamon or Cassia you chose to use in your daily routine, all of the choices are delicious, beneficial ones.
