I love My Spice Sage blends and especially this Berbere Spice. It serves as a key ingredient in the cuisines of Ethiopia and Eritrea. Cook like a pro and get great reviews before the food hits the table.
Have never been disappointed. Even this time when one of the spices I ordered was missing. I called. Explained the situation and without question, you sent it. Will always get my spices from you, especially the rare ones that no shore has.
It's been very difficult to find this spice combo. I used to be able to get it directly from friends who traveled to Eritrea. This comes as close to that as any I've tried. It is a staple in many recipes I make. I order a pound at a time and have been ordering this for years.
This is not berbere in either taste or aroma! I have been cooking and eating Ethiopian food for years and I was absolutely dissapointed in this spice blend. If you are looking for an authentic tasting berbere do not order this.
This is the real deal, wisely toned-down on the heat (which can be amped-up by adding cayenne). The balance of spices does evoke the spice my friends and in-laws smuggled to us in their luggage, some forty years ago!
This is one of the best 'use on everything' seasoning I've ever tasted. When My Spice Sage had the option to try a free 1 oz. seasoning with your order, I chose Berbere Spice and found this wonderful seasoning. I'm sorry they no longer provide that option or perhaps I would find something else just as wonderful.
I use this spice mix every day on a variety of things. In salad dressings, on meats before cooking - it's exotic and very flavorful. I make an "Asian" salad dressing with Berbere, galangal, onion powder, garlic, peanut oil, rice wine vinegar, a bit of Sesame oil, and mirin. It is delicious.
I had not realized this is a BLEND that is made up by you. It should be stated that it is your unique blend. I'm not really saying it's bad. It's just that it is NOT the blend I have been using for YEARS and we didn't like the difference.
I use this with some additional cumin and the resulting stews are wonderful. I also mix it with olive oil and use it as a rub for baked chicken - delicious! Also, My Spice Sage quickly took care of a packaging issue, replaced the problem item in 2 days and made me a very happy continuing customer. I'll be back for more of this spice, for sure.
At first I was a bit hesitant about using a spice with lots of paprika and cinnamon in it, but it is great. My favorite use is with meatballs (pork or lamb), very interesting departure from conventional meatball seasoning.
This is the first time I've tried Berbere Spice, and it is truly delectable with a complex, rich, warm scent and flavor, and a lovely color. All the spices I've bought here smell and taste very fresh, and the service is excellent. I'm thrilled that I discovered My Spice Sage!
